Castaway Cay or Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point? Which Port Is Best?
We visited BOTH of Disney Cruise Line’s private island destinations on the same sailing aboard the Disney Treasure… and we had one big question: Which one is actually better?
In this video, we’re comparing Castaway Cay vs Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point across five key categories:
➡️ Navigation around the island
➡️ Overall vibes
➡️ Food
➡️ Activities
➡️ Shopping
Disney’s Lookout Cay is getting a lot of attention, but does it live up to the hype… or does Castaway Cay still hold the crown? If you’re planning a Disney Cruise or deciding between itineraries, this is the comparison you NEED to see. Follow along as we break it all down and reveal which island wins.
When Disney Cruise Line added Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point to its growing list of destinations, one question immediately started floating around cruise groups, Discord servers, and dinner tables onboard the ships:
How does it compare to Castaway Cay?
Well… during our cruise, we got incredibly lucky because we experienced both ports on the same sailing. That gave us the perfect chance to compare them side by side while everything was still fresh in our minds.
So we decided to settle it the only fair way possible: by breaking both islands down into five categories:
Ability to Navigate the Island
Vibes
Food
Activities
Shopping
And yes… there was spirited debate involved.
First Impressions: Getting Around the Islands
Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point
The very first thing you notice at Lookout Cay is the long pier walk.
And honestly? It’s not bad.
The half-mile walk gives you gorgeous ocean views, incredible angles of the ship behind you, and a really beautiful approach to the island itself. But after a full beach day in the Bahamian heat, that same walk can suddenly feel a lot longer.
Thankfully, Disney does offer tram shuttles for guests who need mobility assistance or just don’t feel like making the trek.
Once you reach the island itself, there’s another tram system that takes guests to the main activity area. The good news is that the layout is extremely simple. There’s very little chance of getting lost because the island is essentially a straightforward point A to point B experience.
Castaway Cay
Castaway Cay immediately feels more compact.
You step off the ship and you’re basically already there. While the walk to the beaches is roughly similar in distance to Lookout Cay’s pier, the overall flow feels easier because you’re already immersed in the island experience from the moment you disembark.
The tram system is also more convenient because it connects you directly to additional areas like Serenity Bay without requiring multiple stages of transportation.
Winner: Castaway Cay
Lookout Cay was easy enough to navigate, but Castaway Cay’s more compact design gives it the edge.
Vibes: Disney Magic vs Bahamian Soul
This category turned out to be surprisingly difficult because the two islands are aiming for completely different experiences.
Lookout Cay Feels Like the Bahamas
Lookout Cay embraces Bahamian culture in a huge way.
There were dancers parading through the shopping areas, live music filling the air, and a vibrant atmosphere that felt deeply connected to the islands themselves. It didn’t feel like “Disney built a beach.” It felt like Disney wanted you to experience the Bahamas.
And honestly? We loved that.
Even though the island still felt very new and not fully lived-in yet, there was something really authentic about the atmosphere.
Castaway Cay Feels Like Disney
Castaway Cay leans much harder into classic Disney theming.
Everything feels polished, whimsical, and unmistakably Disney Cruise Line. The island has had years to mature, and it shows. The landscaping feels fuller, the spaces feel established, and the overall atmosphere is incredibly cohesive.
Winner: Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point
This one comes down entirely to personal preference.
If you want Disney magic everywhere you look, Castaway Cay wins.
If you want a stronger Bahamian cultural experience, Lookout Cay takes it.
For us, Lookout Cay felt more unique.
Food: One Island Clearly Came Hungry
This was probably the easiest category to judge.
Lookout Cay’s Food Was More Adventurous
Both islands shared some familiar Disney cruise staples, but Lookout Cay had a much broader selection overall.
There were curries, rice bowls, international flavors, and a lot more variety across the buffet offerings. Everyone at our table ended up with completely different plates because there was simply more to try.
Meanwhile, Castaway Cay felt more traditional:
Burgers
Fries
Mac and cheese
Standard beach barbecue fare
Not bad by any means… just less exciting.
The Great Mac and Cheese Debate
Ironically, the best mac and cheese we had during the entire cruise was on the islands themselves.
The onboard mac and cheese? Let’s just say it wasn’t winning any awards.
The island version actually had flavor, texture, and real cheesiness instead of the watery consistency we kept running into onboard.
Meat Quality and Overall Consistency
Joe made it his mission to sample basically every protein available across both islands.
Scientific journalism.
The verdict:
Lookout Cay’s meats were more consistently well prepared
Both islands struggled slightly with dry burgers and fish
Lookout Cay simply had more standout items overall
Winner: Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point
More variety, stronger flavors, and more adventurous options gave Lookout Cay a pretty clear victory here.
Activities: Beaches, Trails, and Unexpected History
This category turned into the closest battle of the entire comparison.
Lookout Cay’s Cultural Experiences
One thing Lookout Cay absolutely excels at is atmosphere-driven entertainment.
The Junkanoo celebrations, music, dancing, and cultural presentations gave the island incredible energy. Guests could visit the cultural center, participate in activities, and really immerse themselves in Bahamian traditions.
We also loved the nature trails leading toward the lighthouse. The hiking paths, limestone formations, hidden beaches, and local wildlife made this island feel genuinely adventurous.
But Castaway Cay Dominates the Water
This is where Castaway Cay pulled ahead.
The snorkeling areas were significantly better developed, with:
Underwater statues
Artificial habitats
Massive schools of fish
More marine life overall
Meanwhile, Lookout Cay’s snorkeling areas felt sparse by comparison. Mostly sand, very little underwater plant life, and not much sea life during our visit.
Castaway Cay also offers:
Floating play structures
Paddle boats
Bike rentals
The famous 5K course
And yes… Carrie actually ran the Castaway Cay 5K.
In Birkenstocks.
Legendary behavior.
One of the wildest parts of the course is that portions of it run along the former airstrip once connected to Pablo Escobar’s smuggling operations. That’s not exactly the kind of historical trivia you expect during a Disney cruise vacation.
Winner: Castaway Cay
For now, Castaway Cay offers more to do overall.
That said, we both agreed Lookout Cay has enormous potential as it matures over the next several years.
Shopping: Tourist Trinkets vs Island Artisans
This category surprised us.
Castaway Cay’s Shops
Castaway Cay has multiple gift shops spread across the island, which helps with crowd distribution. But many of the stores felt fairly standard.
A lot of the merchandise had the same “tourist destination souvenir shop” energy you’d find near Niagara Falls or any major vacation hotspot.
Functional? Absolutely.
Memorable? Not always.
Lookout Cay Felt More Authentic
Lookout Cay’s shopping experience stood out because it featured local artisans and handcrafted goods.
We found:
Handmade jewelry
Local artwork
Beach-found shell creations
Paintings inspired by Bahamian wildlife
The Disney store itself also felt brighter, larger, and more organized overall.
Everything being centralized into one shopping area also made browsing much easier.
Winner: Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point
The artisan presence and stronger sense of local culture gave Lookout Cay the advantage here.
Final Score: Lookout Cay Wins 3-2
Final Results
Our Winner: Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point
That said, this is an incredibly close competition.
Castaway Cay is still phenomenal and remains one of the best private cruise destinations anywhere. But Lookout Cay already feels special, and it still has years of growth ahead of it.
Give it time to mature, let the marine life flourish, let the landscaping grow in, and it could very easily become Disney Cruise Line’s crown jewel.
What Do You Think?
Have you visited both islands yet?
Do you prefer the classic Disney atmosphere of Castaway Cay, or the more culturally immersive experience at Lookout Cay?
And while we’re at it… how do they compare to places like CocoCay or the private destinations from other cruise lines?
