Voyager of the Seas Day 3 - Lucha Libre, Tacos & Chaos in Cozumel!
Day 3 of our Cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Voyager of the Seas found us in Cozumel Mexico, where we experienced Lucha Libre, Mexican Beverages and Tacos at the Port, followed by some evening entertainment aboard the ship.
Lucha Libre & Lessons in Self-Esteem: Our Day in Cozumel, Mexico
Welcome to our first port of the trip! We woke up in beautiful Cozumel, Mexico, and let’s just say we had a lot on the agenda. But because I am a creature of habit, nothing happens before a classic breakfast of bacon and eggs.
Stepping off the Voyager of the Seas, we were docked right next to the Icon of the Seas. From the pier, you don’t realize quite how massive it is, but trust me—it’s a beast. After a quick look at some other ships in port (shoutout to the Holland America Eurodam and Carnival Miracle), we headed to our only official excursion of the trip: Barriecito.
Lucha Libre: High-Flying and High-Energy
We went to Barriecito for one main reason: Lucha Libre. For the uninitiated, that’s Mexican wrestling, and it is a blast.
The Pre-Game:
Carrie’s Choice: A Sol Cerveza (dating back to 1899!) with hints of citrus and vanilla. It came with a free shot of tequila. Efficiency!
Joe’s Choice: A Mexican Coke. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: it is the superior version of Coke. No contest.
The show itself was fantastic. It was like a mix of high-flying athleticism and a metal concert vibe. They set the stage early—telling you exactly who the "good guys" and "bad guys" were—and the crowd went wild. Even if you aren't a hardcore wrestling fan, the "poison mist" and the acrobatic moves are worth the price of admission alone.
Tacos and a Spicy Wake-Up Call
After the show, we hit Mandy’s Snack Stop for some chicken tacos. They came with three sauces: mild, medium, and "Hot."
Joe’s Warning: When they say "hot," they mean it. I poured a generous amount on my last taco and basically punished my tongue for 25 minutes. Did I deserve it? Yes. Was it worth it? Absolutely.
The Cozumel Experience (or, "Am I Really That Wrinkly?")
I’ll be honest: the main dock area in Cozumel can be intense. The merchants are aggressive, which is part of the tourism game, but it’s a lot.
My self-esteem took a bit of a hit when I was repeatedly accosted by people telling me I looked "wrinkly" and offering to help me "remove the bags" from under my eyes. Not exactly the ego boost I was looking for on vacation, but hey—at least the tacos were good!
Trivia, Jugglers, and The "Only Canadians" Phenomenon
Back on the ship, we fell into our favorite routine: Trivia. Interestingly, we seem to be the only Canadians on this entire cruise. Every time they ask where people are from, it’s a sea of US hands and then... us. We’re officially being recognized as "The Canadians" now.
We also caught a show by Mr. Edge, a world-class juggler. I cannot overstate how impressive this was—the ship was rocking significantly, and this guy is performing high-level stunts without breaking a sweat. Definitely family-friendly and highly recommended.
A Milestone Worth Celebrating
Dinner was another winner (Tortilla soup and Carne Asada), but the real highlight of the day wasn't the food or the wrestling.
Today was the 20th anniversary of the day Carrie and I met. This milestone was the entire reason for this cruise. There is no human being who has been more supportive or amazing over the last two decades than Carrie, and being able to celebrate our time together with time together was the best part of the trip.
What’s Next?
The celebration doesn't end here! We have another day at sea coming up with more entertainment, more exploration, and (of course) more food.
