January 9 is an important day for Walt Disney World's return to normalcy. The Disney Dining Plan is making its return, Park Reservations are no longer required in most cases and the Park Hopper restrictions have been lifted. On top of that, Disney+ releases its latest series from Marvel, Echo.
2024 is officially underway, and Walt Disney World Resort wasted absolutely no time making headlines. January 9 brought some of the biggest operational changes Disney fans have been waiting years to see return.
While a couple of attractions quietly closed for refurbishment, the bigger story is what guests are getting back.
A Couple of Familiar Closures
Before diving into the big news, a few rides temporarily stepped offstage.
Kali River Rapids began its annual refurbishment closure, something regular visitors have come to expect this time of year.
Meanwhile, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith also closed for refurbishment, leaving Sunset Boulevard just a little quieter than usual. Well, quieter by Disney standards. There’s still enough background music to soundtrack a small civilization.
But closures fade into the rearview mirror pretty quickly when Disney starts reopening beloved guest perks.

The biggest comeback is easily the return of the Disney Dining Plan.

There’s always debate surrounding whether the Dining Plan is “worth it,” and honestly, that answer depends entirely on how you vacation. If you plan strategically, though, you absolutely can maximize the value.
For families especially, it can remove a surprising amount of stress. Food budgeting at Disney can feel like trying to negotiate with a hungry dragon carrying a churro bucket.
Theme Park Reservations Are Gone for Most Guests
Another massive change is the removal of theme park reservations for most standard ticket holders.
If you’re visiting Walt Disney World Resort with a date-based ticket, you no longer need to reserve which park you plan to visit each day.
