The Disney Dining Plan Returns + MORE WDW News
January 9 is an important day for Walt Disney World's return to normalcy. The Disney Dining Plan is making its return, Park Reservations are no longer required in most cases and the Park Hopper restrictions have been lifted. On top of that, Disney+ releases its latest series from Marvel, Echo.
2024 is officially underway, and Walt Disney World Resort wasted absolutely no time making headlines. January 9 brought some of the biggest operational changes Disney fans have been waiting years to see return.
While a couple of attractions quietly closed for refurbishment, the bigger story is what guests are getting back.
A Couple of Familiar Closures
Before diving into the big news, a few rides temporarily stepped offstage.
Kali River Rapids began its annual refurbishment closure, something regular visitors have come to expect this time of year.
Meanwhile, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith also closed for refurbishment, leaving Sunset Boulevard just a little quieter than usual. Well, quieter by Disney standards. There’s still enough background music to soundtrack a small civilization.
But closures fade into the rearview mirror pretty quickly when Disney starts reopening beloved guest perks.
The Disney Dining Plan Returns
The biggest comeback is easily the return of the Disney Dining Plan.
Guests can once again book:
The standard Disney Dining Plan
The Quick-Service Disney Dining Plan
At the moment, Disney has not brought back:
Disney Dining Plan Plus
The Deluxe Disney Dining Plan
There’s always debate surrounding whether the Dining Plan is “worth it,” and honestly, that answer depends entirely on how you vacation. If you plan strategically, though, you absolutely can maximize the value.
For families especially, it can remove a surprising amount of stress. Food budgeting at Disney can feel like trying to negotiate with a hungry dragon carrying a churro bucket.
Theme Park Reservations Are Gone for Most Guests
Another massive change is the removal of theme park reservations for most standard ticket holders.
If you’re visiting Walt Disney World Resort with a date-based ticket, you no longer need to reserve which park you plan to visit each day.
That means more flexibility, less pre-trip spreadsheet panic, and fewer moments where your vacation starts feeling like air traffic control.
There are still some exceptions:
Annual Passholders still require reservations in many cases
Certain military tickets
Some tour groups and specialty ticket types
But for the average vacationing family, this is one of the clearest signs Disney is continuing its return to pre-pandemic operations.
Park Hopping Is Finally Back to Normal
Park hopping restrictions are also gone.
Previously, guests had to wait until after 2:00 PM before hopping to another park. As of January 9, guests can park hop whenever they want.
That means:
Morning at Magic Kingdom Park
Lunch at EPCOT
Evening in Disney's Hollywood Studios
All without staring at your phone waiting for an invisible timer to expire like a theme park parole officer.
Disney does note that guests can still be turned away from a park if it reaches capacity, but realistically, that situation is expected to be extremely rare.
A Return to Disney Magic
For a lot of families, these changes hit emotionally too.
Many Disney trips planned for 2020 simply never happened. Borders closed, parks shut down, and when vacations finally returned, much of the spontaneity and convenience had disappeared with them.
Dining plans vanished. Park reservations became mandatory. Park hopping restrictions limited flexibility.
For parents hoping to recreate the same magic they experienced with older children, it changed the feeling of the vacation in ways that are hard to explain unless you lived through it.
Now, bit by bit, those pieces are returning.
Echo Launches on Disney+
Outside the parks, Disney+ also had a major release day with all five episodes of Echo dropping at once.
The series follows:
Maya Lopez
Also known as Echo
First introduced in Hawkeye
The story sees Maya returning to her hometown while confronting her past and dealing with Kingpin.
The cast includes:
Alaqua Cox
Vincent D'Onofrio
Charlie Cox
Graham Greene
Tantoo Cardinal
And yes, for longtime Marvel fans, seeing Daredevil involved at all is enough to make the internet collectively throw a billy club through a wall.
Final Thoughts
January 9 ended up being a huge day for Disney fans.
The return of dining plans, the end of most park reservations, and unrestricted park hopping all signal a much bigger shift toward the Disney vacation experience many guests remember and missed.
For families planning trips in 2024, vacations just got a whole lot easier to navigate.
And honestly? That little bit of restored spontaneity might be the most magical thing Disney could have brought back.
